The proprietary Abrasion and/or Fog Resistant surface coatings on SHIELDS® SUPERCOATED™ and/or ANTI-FOG coated polycarbonate significantly improves performance.
Periodic cleaning using proper procedures and compatible cleaners are recommended to prolong service life.
Cleaning the SUPERCOAT™ hard-coat
with a mild solution of soap or detergent and lukewarm water.
2. Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently wash the sheet to loosen dirt and grime
and rinse well with clean water.
3. To prevent water spotting, thoroughly dry with chamois or cellulose
4. Avoid the use of abrasive cleaners, squeegees and/or other cleaning
implements that may mar or gouge the coating.
Cleaning Agents found to be Compatible under laboratory conditions:
· Aqueous Solutions of Soaps and Detergents
Mr. Clean2 Fantastik3 Formula 4094
Sumalight D12 Brucodecid
· Organic Solvents
Hexel, F.O. 554 Naphtha (VM&P grade)
Neleco-Placer Turco 5042
All residual organic solvents should be removed with a secondary rinse.
Cleaning the ANTI-FOG coating
DO NOT USE WINDOW CLEANERS
Use soap & water ONLY (Dawn2 is recommended – 1 tsp. Per 24 oz. of water)
Use a CLEAN soft cloth, soft sponge, or chamois – DO NOT USE PAPER TOWELS
If dirty, wet the windshield heavily, wipe until wet streaks are
present and allow
finishing by air-drying.
DO NOT RUB DRY – that may
abrade the ANTI-FOG coating.
(A) Butyl cellosolve (for removal of paints, marking pen inks, lipstick, etc.). The
use of masking tape, adhesive tape or lint removal tools works well for lifting off
old weathered paints.
(B) To remove labels, stickers, etc., the use of kerosene or VM&P naphtha are
generally effective. When the solvent will not penetrate sticker material,
apply heat (hair dryer) to soften the adhesive and promote removal.
IMPORTANT: If a material is found to be incompatible in a short-term test, it will usually be found to be incompatible in the field. The converse, however, is not always true. Favorable performance is no guarantee that actual end-use conditions have been duplicated. Therefore, these results should be used as a guide only and it is recommended that the user test the products under actual end-use conditions.
Suggestions for Fabricating your SHIELDS®
Windshield and Windows
Your polycarbonate SHIELDS® can be trimmed using a standard band saw or saber saw with wood-type blades (fine metal cutting blades may cause the chips to melt behind the blade). Leave the protective masking in place or apply masking tape along the cutting path to avoid gouging.
Your polycarbonate SHIELDS® can be drilled using a standard metal drill bit – without making any modifications. For 1/4" diameter bits (or less), 1800 rpm is recommended; for larger bits, use 1000 rpm. Avoid drilling too quickly reducing heat build-up and stress.
Using ADHESIVES to INSTALL
If you use windshield adhesive to install your SHIELDS®
- with or without the gasket –
the adhesive MUST be an RTV SILICONE.
Urethane based adhesives will not bond to the SUPERCOAT™
Using FASTENERS to INSTALL
If you are using fasteners requiring holes in your SHIELDS® windshield or window – slightly oversize your hole & add a small amount of RTV silicone or other grommet to absorb expansion & contraction energies. Countersinking and riveting will result in spider cracks around the hole.
For racing in the RAIN –
there is no need to apply any water repellents – such as RainX5 –
as the SUPERCOAT™ will repel water
better than any over the counter applications.
